Digital Natives have grown up with physical and virtual media, accepting both as “reality.” This publication showcases the convergence of these realms and its real-world implications. It features experimental interviews mimicking online conversations, overcoming time and location barriers. We can contribute to conversations long after they are published, like replying to a three-year-old Twitter thread. Publishing now transcends printed books to digital screens, reflecting the real/virtual interplay Digital Natives experience daily. Transcribed, recorded, corrupted, censored, redacted, striked, cancelled, deleted—these cyber publishing features are highlighted in the typesetting, questioning permanence of the real and digital memory. “Tandem” aims to remind us of how and why we choose to communicate and highlight the act of publishing as the tether that binds the physical to the virtual.

This collaborative project futurecasts a biomimetic device design and the resultant culture that emerges from 21st century widespread use of synthetic media. This takes the form of a future-cast brand campaign set in 2040 for use by the BBC and their audience. The campaign showcases a human chemical sensor including: the product, promotional video, packaging, manual and visuals of real life application. With this device we are able to enhance communication through chemical indicators, providing sensory information to spectators of BBC entertainment and news platforms. In a world where deep fakes, fake news and information distrust is prevalent, ASPEN seeks to re-build trust.

I return to my roots, by the beaches of my home island: where I am reminded of how soft the human animal really is. This zine showcases my childhood, in hopes to inspire viewers to reconnect with the softness, ease and childhood wonder that is essential to us. I combine my love for image making with poetry, fusing two integral parts of my creative practice. Words hold so much power in breathing life into ideas that otherwise would be limited into the confines of our thoughts, and I believe we must breathe life back into our roots to stay grounded and connected.
