FOOD RECORDS: OYSTER

This project highlights the information systems nature has in place to record its own lifetime. Through shell growth patterns, oysters are able to record the weather and growing environment, alternating between dark and light layers for every summer and winter. Knowledge isn’t unique to humanity, and sentience even less so. This project challenges user centred design by extracting nature’s self recording systems. Using pattern-generation as means of displaying information, this project reveals the scale of annual oyster cultivation for human consumption.
